About Halter Ranch
Halter Ranch is the rare Paso Robles estate that does both Rhône and Bordeaux at a high level — a 2,700-acre property in the Adelaida District with vineyards farmed to organic certification and one of the most architecturally striking winery buildings in the region. Swiss owner Hansjörg Wyss acquired the ranch in 2000 and has invested heavily in vineyard development and winery infrastructure since.
The flagship Ancestor (Bordeaux blend named after the property's ancient oak) and Côtes de Paso (Rhône blend) sit at the top of a portfolio that includes single-bottling Cabernet, Syrah, Viognier, and a varied selection of small-production estate wines. The estate is also home to a working cattle ranch and significant biodiversity programmes — Halter is one of the leaders in sustainable winegrowing in California.
What to Expect
The standard tasting in the modern hospitality centre walks through 5 wines. The premium estate tour includes a vineyard drive, a stop at the historic ranch buildings, and a cave tasting. The grounds are open for picnics and self-guided exploration.

Visitor Tips
Reservations recommended on weekends. The estate tour is excellent value — the property is enormous and worth the drive-through. The picnic grounds are family-friendly. Ancestor is the flagship but the Côtes de Paso is the better value bottle. Late spring (wildflowers) and autumn (golden vines) are the prettiest times.
