About V. Sattui Winery
V. Sattui Winery is one of Napa Valley's most beloved family-owned estates — a winery and artisan marketplace that has been independently operated since its revival in 1976 by Dario Sattui, who rebuilt his great-grandfather Vittorio's original San Francisco winery in the heart of St. Helena. What makes V. Sattui unique in Napa is that it sells its wines exclusively at the winery and through its wine club — you will never find a bottle of V. Sattui in a wine shop or restaurant, which gives every visit a sense of exclusivity.
The wine programme is extensive, producing over 40 different wines from estate and sourced Napa Valley fruit. The flagship Vittorio's Reserve is a Bordeaux-style blend named for the founder's great-grandfather and represents the estate's finest barrels each vintage. The Preston Vineyard and Henry Ranch Cabernet Sauvignons showcase single-vineyard expressions from some of Napa's best sites. V. Sattui has won more awards at the California State Fair Commercial Wine Competition than any other winery — a remarkable record of consistent quality across their entire range.
Perhaps the greatest draw beyond the wines is V. Sattui's legendary artisan deli and marketplace — a curated collection of over 200 cheeses, charcuterie, fresh bread, salads, and gourmet provisions that makes it the ultimate lunch stop in Napa Valley. The two-acre picnic grounds shaded by towering oaks provide one of the few places in Napa where you can enjoy a leisurely outdoor lunch with a bottle of wine in a genuinely beautiful setting. It is the Napa Valley experience distilled to its purest form: great wine, great food, and a beautiful day.
What to Expect
V. Sattui offers both walk-in and reserved tastings. The standard tasting includes a flight of five wines at the main tasting bar, where friendly staff guide you through the range. Premium reserve tastings are also available by appointment. The real magic, however, is the combination: taste first, identify your favourites, then head to the deli to assemble a cheese and charcuterie spread that pairs perfectly with a bottle or glass on the picnic grounds.
The property feels like a European village marketplace set in the heart of wine country. The stone buildings, garden pathways, and oak-shaded lawns create an atmosphere that encourages lingering. Families, couples, and groups of friends spread across the grounds on any given afternoon. V. Sattui is one of the few Napa estates where spending two hours feels natural — between the tasting, the deli, and the picnic grounds, it is a complete wine country experience in one stop.
Wines to Try
Visitor Tips
No reservations are needed for the main tasting bar, but reserve tastings should be booked in advance. Come hungry — the deli is one of the best in Napa Valley and the picnic grounds are not to be missed. The Vittorio's Reserve is the must-try premium wine; the Gamay Rouge is a crowd-pleaser and perfect for picnic pairing. Weekend afternoons are busy; arrive before noon for the best combination of fresh deli selections and available picnic space. Remember: V. Sattui wines are only sold at the winery, so buy what you love before you leave.
