About Silver Oak
Silver Oak has spent five decades pursuing a single, focused ambition: to make the world's best Cabernet Sauvignon. Founded in 1972 by Ray Duncan and winemaker Justin Meyer, the estate has built its reputation on a remarkably consistent house style — exclusively American oak-aged Cabernet Sauvignon with a signature richness, approachability, and generous fruit character that has earned a devoted global following. Silver Oak is one of the few Napa producers that releases its wines only when they are ready to drink, with each vintage spending years in barrel and bottle before reaching the market.
The Oakville estate was completely rebuilt in 2016 with a stunning new winery and tasting room designed as one of the most environmentally sustainable winery buildings in the world. The LEED Platinum-certified facility uses reclaimed materials, solar power, and a living wall that purifies wastewater naturally. The architecture is contemporary and warm, with soaring ceilings, natural light, and views across the Oakville vineyard that make it one of the most inviting tasting rooms in Napa Valley.
Silver Oak produces two Cabernet Sauvignons — one from Napa Valley and one from Alexander Valley in Sonoma County — each reflecting its distinct origin. The Napa Valley bottling is the more structured and age-worthy of the two, with dark fruit, baking spice, and the sweet vanilla notes that define American oak aging. The Alexander Valley offers a slightly softer, more approachable style. Together they demonstrate how a single grape variety and a consistent winemaking philosophy can produce distinctly different wines from different terroirs.
What to Expect
The Silver Oak tasting experience takes place in the elegant Oakville tasting room, where visitors are welcomed with a pour of the estate's Twomey label before moving to the flagship Cabernets. The standard tasting includes both the Alexander Valley and Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, allowing a direct comparison that illustrates the influence of terroir. Knowledgeable hosts walk guests through each wine with an emphasis on the estate's unique aging philosophy and American oak programme.
The property itself is worth exploring — the sustainable architecture, the water tower (a Silver Oak landmark), and the barrel room where thousands of American oak barrels are stacked in neat rows. Premium experiences include food-and-wine pairings and behind-the-scenes tours of the production facilities. The atmosphere is polished but welcoming; Silver Oak manages to feel both world-class and accessible in a way that few Napa estates achieve.

Visitor Tips
Reservations are required and should be booked at least a week in advance. The Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is the flagship pour — make sure it is included in your flight. Silver Oak wines are exclusively American oak-aged, which gives them a distinctive profile; come with an open mind if you typically prefer French oak styles. The gift shop often stocks older vintages not available at retail. Oakville Cross Road is one of Napa's prettiest stretches — drive slowly and enjoy the approach.
