About Beringer Vineyards
Beringer Vineyards holds the distinction of being Napa Valley's oldest continuously operating winery, founded in 1876 by German immigrant brothers Jacob and Frederick Beringer. The estate has produced wine without interruption for nearly 150 years — surviving Prohibition by making sacramental wine — and its Rhine House, a stunning 17-room Victorian mansion modeled after the Beringer family home in Mainz, Germany, is a designated National Historic Landmark and one of the most beautiful buildings in all of wine country.
The Private Reserve programme is where Beringer truly excels. The Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, first produced in 1977, was the first wine from any American winery to receive a perfect 100-point score from Wine Spectator — a milestone that established both Beringer and Napa Valley as producers of genuinely world-class wine. The Private Reserve Chardonnay is equally accomplished, consistently ranking among the finest white wines produced in California. These wines are sourced from the estate's best vineyard blocks and represent decades of winemaking expertise.
Beyond the prestige wines, Beringer operates one of the most historically rich visitor programmes in Napa Valley. The hand-carved tunnels dug into the hillside by Chinese labourers in the 1870s remain in use today as barrel aging caves, and walking through them is a visceral connection to the earliest days of California winemaking. The estate grounds, with their manicured gardens, heritage oaks, and the Rhine House as a centerpiece, create a setting that few wineries in the world can rival.
What to Expect
Beringer offers several tasting tiers. The standard experience takes place in the original Rhine House tasting room, where guests sample a flight of estate wines in one of the most beautiful interior spaces in Napa Valley. The Legacy Cave Tour adds a guided walk through the historic hand-carved tunnels with barrel samples and a premium tasting. The Private Reserve experience, by appointment, is the pinnacle — a seated tasting of library and current-release Private Reserve wines in an intimate setting.
The historic grounds are a highlight in their own right. The Rhine House, with its stained glass windows and Victorian architecture, feels like stepping into another era. The surrounding gardens and ancient oak trees create one of the most photogenic settings in Napa Valley. History is woven into every corner of the estate, and the staff are excellent at bringing it to life. Allow at least 60-90 minutes for a full visit that includes both the tasting and the grounds.
Wines to Try
Visitor Tips
The Legacy Cave Tour is highly recommended — the hand-carved tunnels are a genuine piece of California history and the barrel samples are a treat. The Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon is the must-try wine; it is one of the most decorated Cabernets in American history. Located on Main Street in St. Helena, Beringer is easy to combine with lunch in town. The estate can be busy on weekend afternoons; morning visits offer a more intimate experience. Photography in the Rhine House and gardens is encouraged.
