About Hermann J. Wiemer Vineyard
Hermann J. Wiemer Vineyard is the most acclaimed estate in the Finger Lakes and one of the finest Riesling producers in the world outside of Germany. Hermann Wiemer, born to a winemaking family in the Mosel, founded the estate in 1979 with the conviction that the Finger Lakes shale and slate soils could produce Riesling worthy of comparison with Germany's best. Forty-five years later, the wines have proven him right many times over.
Today the estate is run by Fred Merwarth and Oskar Bynke, who took over from Wiemer in 2007. The portfolio is built around three single-vineyard dry Rieslings — HJW Vineyard, Magdalena Vineyard, and Josef Vineyard — each made from a single estate-grown block and named for a family member. The wines show distinct expressions of Seneca Lake's eastern shore terroir, with HJW the most mineral, Magdalena the most floral, and Josef the most powerful. The estate also produces excellent late-harvest Riesling, Pinot Noir, and a fine méthode traditionnelle sparkling wine.
What to Expect
The tasting room is on the estate vineyards along Seneca Lake — a converted barn with a back terrace overlooking the vines. The standard tasting walks through 5-6 wines including all three single-vineyard Rieslings. The premium tasting adds older library vintages and a deeper dive into the terroir differences.

Reservations strongly recommended in season. Order the single-vineyard flight — comparing HJW, Magdalena, and Josef is the most educational tasting in the Finger Lakes. The library Rieslings (8-15 years old) are extraordinary and only available at the winery. Buy by the case; these wines age remarkably.
