How much food is served on the tour?
Local Tasting Tours 1:30 pm daytime tours include a generous tasting of food at each of the featured local eateries on the tour – we feel it is plenty for a light lunch. The 1:30 pm tours are not designed to replace a full meal, however, many of our guests have found the tours very filling.  Our Night Out on Quinpool Food Tour includes substantial food tastings at each restaurant which are sufficient for a full dinner, and also include two wine tastings.
How much walking is involved? Do I need to be in shape?
All Local Tasting Tour routes are approximately 1 kilometre in length (15 minutes of walking).   Tours are suitable for most ages and fitness levels; we walk at a moderate speed and rest for tastings at each scheduled stop, and at other points of interest. The tours take approximately 2 hours from start to finish.  Most tours do not come full circle and guests are required to find their own way back to the tour departure point (not more than 1 km distance).  Guides will offer any transportation or map information needed.
What is included in the tour?
Tours include a memorable Halifax guided local culinary tour experience, all food and drink tastings, a take-home treat, a map and local food guide.  Ticket price does not include taxes or gratuities.
Do locals take your tours?
Nearly half of our food tour guests are Halifax locals.  We find that locals enjoy our tours as a fun date, a new way to introduce visiting friends and family to the city, have a fun outing with co-workers.  Our local guests love to support local businesses and revisit/check out great eateries they may have missed. Our tours provide details and little known facts about the food, neighbourhoods and businesses on our tours which are of interest to locals as well as tourists.
Are gratuities included?
Gratuities for food tour guides are not included in the ticket price. Tips are greatly appreciated but not mandatory. The standard gratuity in the service industry is 15%.
What if I have dietary restrictions or allergies?
The tastings on our 1:30 pm daytime tours are chef’s choice and can change daily,  so we are unable to guarantee any alteration of the food samples on our tours. Please let us know in advance if you have any allergies so that we can obtain a full ingredients list from chefs.  However, the Night Out on Quinpool Food Tour is designed specifically to be gluten-free and vegan-friendly, and to accommodate any food sensitivities. 48 hours notice required.
Is there a good time to take the tour?
We suggest trying one of our culinary walking tours near the beginning of your visit to Halifax in order to give yourself the opportunity to revisit your favourite local eateries and neighbourhoods later on in your stay. Tours tend to book at an even rate throughout the season, so there is no “best” day in the week to try our tour. We do not operate tours on major holidays.
Should I bring my children on the tour?
Our tours involve a fair amount of standing, walking and listening, which some parents may decide is not appropriate for their child’s attention span or age. Small infants who are not participating in the food tastings are welcome to come along for free.  The local food tastings are enjoyed by all ages, however, we do not offer a reduced children’s rate on tour tickets, except for the Open Kitchen Food Tour.
Is the tour wheelchair accessible?
Due to the historic nature of many of the buildings on our  tour routes, our tours are not fully wheelchair accessible at this time. Guests using a wheelchair have in the past enjoyed our Downtown SoMo Food Tour, however, as a majority of the restaurant stops are wheelchair accessible, and the remaining two have accessible patios where tastings can easily be enjoyed.  Please call or email us with any questions regarding mobility and we will do our best to accommodate you.
Can I buy gift certificates?
Local Tasting Tours gift certificates for our 2014 season are available online through our website – please see our GIFT CERTIFICATES link on any page.  In order to use your gift certificate, you must contact Local Tastings Tours at least 48 hours in advance to book the tour date of your choice.  All gift certificate bookings are subject to availability.
Can I book a private group tour?
Private tours are available for groups of 8 or more, based on availability.  Please call 902 818 9055 or email for more information and to reserve.
Are there vegetarian and vegan options on the tour?
Our Night Out on Quinpool food tour is designed to be vegetarian and vegan friendly -48 hours notice is required. The chefs at the featured local restaurants on our daytime tours provide new food offerings daily, and unfortunately we are unable to alter the tastings on these tours on any given day.
Are beverages served on the tour?
We suggest that you bring your own water on 1:30 pm daytime food tours. The Night Out on Quinpool Food Tour includes two wine tastings, the HFX North Craft Beer and Food Tour includes three small craft beer tastings and water on the tour. The Downtown Halifax and SoMo Food Tours offer water at various stops along the route.
Does the tour end at the same place we meet?
The only tour which operates as a loop is the Downtown SoMo Food Tour.  All other routes end in a different location than the departure site. All routes are approximately 1 kilometre in length, and your guide will assist you with finding your way back to the tour departure site either by foot or transit.  A map of the route is provided.
Will we have a wine tasting on the tour?
Our Night Out on Quinpool Food Tour includes two wine tastings on the route, and the HFX North Craft Beer and Food Tour includes three small craft beer tastings.  Please call or email us for more details.  902 818 9055
What types of foods are served on the tour?
The featured local eateries on our tours represent a wide range of locally sourced foods, cultures and styles of cuisine. Each item or dish is served in a generous bite-sized format on our daytime tours, a larger portion for our evening tours. Tastings on 1:30 pm daytime tours are often in-hand or standing tastings.  For more information on the local restaurants featured on our tours and their outstanding cuisine, check out the restaurant links on the Featured Restaurants page.
What about shopping while I'm on the tour?
We work hard to keep our tours on schedule to make sure your food tasting is as fresh as possible when we arrive at each tasting destination. If you wish to make a purchase on the tour, there is often time to do so quickly. All eateries may be revisited after the tour and are within 15 minutes walking distance.
Do we sit down at tables in the restaurants to sample the food?
All  1:30 pm daytime tour tastings are “on the go” – although we are able to sit at a few of the eateries. In order to offer as many different tastings as possible on our short tours, food samples will be enjoyed for the most part while standing and discussing each featured restaurant and its cuisine. Each tasty “bite” is easy to eat; small tasting plates, napkins and cutlery are provided.  Our Night out on Quinpool tour offers seated tastings at a more relaxed pace in a progressive dinner format.
What Halifax restaurants will we visit?
All of the shops and eateries we visit on the tours are locally owned Halifax businesses.  Please visit the links to our featured restaurants on our individual tour pages or the Featured Restaurant page to learn more about each restaurant’s menus.
Are the tours offered in different languages?
Occasionally our food tours may be offered in a French-English bilingual format.  Please call for details, or to make arrangements if you wish to bring an interpreter along on your tour experience.
What if it's raining?
Local Tasting Tours operates rain or shine and provides umbrellas for your use – please wear weather-appropriate clothing and footwear.  A majority of tour time takes place indoors sampling food, and we find a little wet weather never gets in the way of the fun of eating!
What's your 'babes in arms' policy?
Please call to let us know in advance if you are bringing an infant or child under the age of three on the tour. If your child is not participating in the food tastings, you do not need to purchase a ticket for them.
Will bathrooms be available during the tour?
Yes, there will be an opportunity for a brief bathroom break at a selected stop on each tour.
Are you allowed to take pictures on the tour?
Yes, please take pictures!  There are lots of photo opportunities of beautiful old buildings, wonderful scenic views and delicious plates, and we want you to remember your Halifax culinary experience.  Don’t forget to share your photos with us on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter!
Is there parking nearby?
There is some parking available nearby all Local Tasting Tours departure sites.  Please call or email for more information. 902 818 9055
